Anneka Textiles is the platform for the work of DESIGN-RESEARCHER Cathryn Anneka Hall.

RESEARCH

Cathryn is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at the

Centre for Circular Design (CCD) - UAL Chelsea. Working under both Becky Earley and Kate Goldsworthy, Cathryn is exploring the potential for design to drive a more circular materials economy in which her research focuses on

Design for Mechanical Textile Recycling.

This spans the cascading, blending and design within the textile recycling system. Specialising in wool and acrylic recycling from knitwear, which are difficult to be re-used. The research investigates how we might best recycle problematic blended textile fibres, creating a more circular future. Cathryn's background as a designer in the fashion industry has heavily influenced her research, and includes testing recycled materials at an industrial scale.

Cathryn previously worked at CCD as a research assistant on the Mistra Future Fashion project and then moved into her ongoing PhD research. She has published both conference papers and journal articles.

TEACHING

Cathryn currently works as an associate lecturer at UAL-Chelsea College of Art, teaching across BA, MA and Graduate Diploma Textile Design courses, in both practice and theory.

Cathryn's teaching experience spans lectures, webinars, studio-based workshops, online workshops, seminars and one-to-one tutorials. This includes specialist sustainable / circular design, subject specific lectures on textile recycling and professional development talks, that draw from her professional practice within industry and academia.

Additionally, Cathryn has co-established with researcher Laetitia Forst, the 'There and Back Again' event series and

co-organises the 'Circular Design Lab' discussion group.

CONSULTANCY

Cathryn has a background working as a commercial knitwear designer in the fast-fashion industry, working for both brands and suppliers designing for long and short lead times. This experience gives Cathryn the perfect grounding for working with industry to disseminate her expertise in circular and recycled textiles.

Cathryn currently teaches a UAL Short Course - Design for Sustainability: Fashion and Textiles as part of the CCD team. This covers the complex terrain of sustainability and identifies workable ideas for systemic change within the textile industry. This is attended by a range of industry and independent designers.
